Union James Apartments
981 20th Ave. & 2101 E. James St., Seattle, WA 98122

The Union James Apartments are two project based Section 8 buildings. Although the buildings are both named Union James, they are more commonly referred to as the "Union" building and the "James" building. The reference to the buildings and their name are due in part to the building locations. The "Union" building is located at the corner of 20th Ave. and E. Union St. The "James" building is located at the corner of 21st Ave. and E. James St. These two buildings offer affordable housing to households at or below 30% of the area median income with a HUD rent subsidy.

In 2002 CADA purchased the Union James Apartments. Prior to the purchase of the building, a Union James tenant urged CADA to purchase the buildings. The Union James had a HUD Section 8 contract that was due to expire. The current owner was opting not to renew the HUD contract . Without renewal, the units would be converted to market rate units. The tenants of the building were facing displacement as the units would be unaffordable to them. CADA's purchase of the Union James Apartments allowed the preservation of affordable housing at this level.

Both Union James buildings underwent moderate rehabilitation in 2004-2006. Rehabilitation work included both structural and cosmetic repairs. The Union James serves families and individuals.
